Chiropractic Is About More Than Fixing Pain
If you’ve ever Googled “chiropractor” or followed a few Instagram posts of people being adjusted and came away more confused than when you started, you’re not alone. Most people picture someone cracking a back and calling it a day. After more than 25 years in practice, I can tell you: that picture is missing about 90% of the story.
While Chiropractic is about total health and well-being, it is true most people initially come to our clinic because their lower back or neck is killing them or they can’t turn their head and see their blind spot! But,what we’re actually working on is not just your spine but also your nervous system — and maintaining its balance to allow your entire body to function at its best.
Think of your nervous system as the master controller of everything that happens in your body. When your spine is out of alignment — from poor posture, stress, repetitive strain, or years of sitting at a desk — that system starts working harder than it should. It gets stuck in what I call sympathetic overdrive: your body’s version of a permanent low-grade alarm state. Most of my patients are living in this state without even realizing it. Chiropractic care helps turn that alarm off.
What Actually Happens at Your First Appointment
I hear this question often: “What do you actually do?” A first appointment with me is thorough, and most patients are surprised by just how much we cover.
We start with a consultation. I want to hear what you’re experiencing, what’s been going on, and — most importantly — what you want out of your care. Your goals shape everything. Someone who wants to get back to running has different needs than someone who just wants to make it through a workday without a headache.
Then we start the examination, which typically includes:
- Postural assessment — using the Posture Screen app, which gives you an actual photo showing how your body is holding itself. Most patients have never seen this before and find it eye-opening.
- Range of motion testing across the different areas of your spine and extremities, so we have a clear baseline to work from.
- Orthopedic testing specific to your case — not a generic checklist, but tests that make sense for what you’re presenting with.
- Neurological testing where appropriate, including sensory exams and muscle testing.
- Motion palpation and soft tissue palpation — my hands finding the information that imaging sometimes can’t.
If X-rays are required, we will send you to a nearby clinic and give you helpful guidance in the meantime. When you return, we go through your results and your report of findings and a specific care plan tailored for your needs. You can read more about what to expect at your first appointment, including paperwork and timing, before you come in.
The Results That Surprise People Most
Patients usually come in for some type of pain. What they often leave with is something they did not expect.
Time and again, I hear the same things: “I’m sleeping better.” “I have more energy.” “I feel stronger.” These aren’t side effects — they’re what happens when your nervous system is no longer working in overtime just to keep you upright.
One of the memorable moments in my more than 25 years of practice involved a patient who came in with upper back pain that was stopping her from playing tennis. Headaches weren’t even on her list of complaints — she’d been having them daily for over a year and had simply accepted them as part of her life. After just a few treatments, she came back and told me she’d just had her first week in a year with no headaches!! She wasn’t even looking for that. It happened because we restored balance to her spine and nervous system, and her whole body responded.
Another patient mentioned almost as an aside that her digestion had improved. Again — not what she came in for. But when the body comes back into balance, it often finds its way back to functioning the way it was designed to, in ways that go far beyond the original complaint!
Why This Happens
When your spine is misaligned and your nervous system is under chronic stress, the effects aren’t limited to where you feel pain. That same nervous system governs your sleep, your digestion, your immune response, your energy levels. Restoring proper spinal function through chiropractic care helps to regulate and restore the function of the nervous system and creates conditions where all of those systems can work better — not just the one that brought you through the door.
Who Benefits Most from Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic can help a wide range of people, but in my practice I know exactly who I can help the most. She’s usually in her 40s or 50s. She works hard — often at a desk, often in front of screens for hours at a stretch. She’s a mother, which means her own health has been consistently coming last. She tries to work out and eat well, but life keeps getting in the way. She carries her stress in her neck and shoulders, gets headaches she’s learned to push through, and runs on coffee and willpower!
She’s not broken. She’s just been running on empty for too long, without anyone helping her reset.
If that sounds familiar, here’s what I want you to know: chiropractic is safe, it’s effective, and it works for people in exactly this situation. As a midtown Toronto chiropractor with more than 25 years of seeing patients like her get real, lasting results —- and the research backs it up just as strongly.
Common Misconceptions About Chiropractic
A few things I hear often, and what I’d say in response:
- “It’s just for bad backs.” Back pain is one of the most common reasons people come in, but the benefits extend well beyond that. Neck pain, headaches, jaw tension, shoulder issues, hip problems — these are all things we work with regularly.
- “Isn’t it dangerous?” Chiropractic is one of the safest forms of healthcare available. Serious adverse events are extremely rare. I’ve been treating patients for more than 25 years and safety is always the first consideration in how I approach care.
- “Do I have to keep going forever?” That’s entirely up to you and your goals. Some patients come in for a specific issue and once it’s resolved, they’re done. Others choose to continue with regular maintenance care because they feel better and want to protect their spine long-term. There’s no pressure either way.
- “I’ve tried it before and it didn’t work.” Chiropractic isn’t one-size-fits-all. A thorough examination and individualized care plan make a real difference. If a previous experience didn’t get you results, it’s worth exploring whether a more structured approach might.
The Bigger Picture: Prevention, Not Just Treatment
After more than 25 years in practice, if I could put one idea into the world it would be this: don’t wait for pain to start.
Chiropractic isn’t just a solution to a problem — it’s a strategy for keeping your body healthy. Regular care keeps your spine in balance, keeps your nervous system out of that sympathetic overdrive, and helps prevent the kind of slow, cumulative damage that shows up as chronic pain, stiffness, and fatigue years down the road.
Your spine is the foundation of how you move through your life. The effects of everyday life — the desk work, the driving, the stress, the carrying and lifting and not-enough-sleeping — add up quietly over time. Chiropractic gives your body a way to counteract that before it becomes a problem.
That’s what a chiropractor does! Not just cracking backs — helping your body stay balanced, function optimally, and resilient for the rest of your years!
