How Long Do You Need Chiropractic Care?

Adjusting woman's back“How long do I have to go for chiropractic care?” This is one of the most common questions I hear in my practice. After more than 25 years as a family care chiropractor specializing in posture care, my answer is simple: it depends on your goals. Are you looking for short-term pain relief, or do you want to feel stronger, have more energy, prevent future injuries, and continue doing the things you love?

Pain is often what brings people into my office, but my goal has never been simply to reduce pain. My goal is to improve how your spine, posture, and nervous system function so your body can support a healthier, more active life.

The Three Phases of Chiropractic Care

1. Acute Care

The first few weeks focus on reducing pain and inflammation, calming the nervous system, and helping you move more comfortably. Many people begin to feel better during this stage, but feeling better does not always mean the underlying problem has been corrected.

2. Corrective Care

Over the next few months we focus on correcting posture, improving movement, and strengthening the spine and the muscles that support it. As a posture-focused chiropractor, I see every day how hours at desks, laptops, and phones create stress patterns that need to be corrected—not just relieved.

3. Maintenance Care

Once patients have returned to work, sports, walking, golf, tennis, or playing with their children without pain, many choose maintenance care to help keep their body functioning well, reduce flare-ups, and continue feeling strong and active.

Real Patient Stories

A musician came to see me with shoulder pain that made playing the saxophone difficult. After a thorough examination, we discovered the source of the problem was actually his neck, which was also causing weakness in his hand. After about three months of care, he was back playing pain-free.

Another patient, a young mother, arrived barely able to move. Imaging revealed three disc herniations. We began with frequent visits to reduce pain and inflammation, then progressed to restoring movement and strength. Within a few months she was able to pick up her baby and sit on the floor to play again. Today she chooses maintenance care every two weeks because she understands that looking after her spine helps her continue enjoying life with her family.

Do You Have to Go Forever?

No. You always have a choice. Some people come only when symptoms return. Others choose ongoing care because they appreciate how much better they feel, move, and function. I always ask patients about their long-term goals because chiropractic care should support the life they want to live.

My Personal Experience

I receive regular chiropractic care myself. The physical nature of my work places repetitive stress on my spine, and weekly care helps me continue doing what I love—helping my patients.
